The upcoming DJI Phantom 5

The new DJI Mavic 2 was just released a few months ago and now there has been a buzz growing about the upcoming DJI Phantom 5. This new updated version of the drone is on every drone enthusiast’s mind due to the promised improvements that are significantly better than the older versions. There have been rumors that the company was having issues with the production of the drone with the release date consequently being pushed to spring of 2019. This new drone promises to be unique in terms of price offering and many more changes. DJI is known for innovation and therefore this release is propped to be the best drone release of the year. This post seeks to discuss the upcoming DJI Phantom 5 drone release, its features and what makes it stand out from previous versions.

There is yet to be an official date provided for the release of this new drone, but rumors seem to be pointing at November 28th. As stated earlier, there has been a delay in the release of this model which was initially marketed in April 2018. This has been thought to maybe be a marketing strategy of building suspense and enthusiasm. The company has also stopped selling some earlier and bigger models which makes it seem like they could be gearing up to release the new Phantom 5 drone this year. Drone enthusiasts remain hopeful that this release will finally happen this year. In terms of pricing, the Phantom 5 is expected to appeal to the casual hobbyist with is competitive price of between $1,100 and $1,500. The battery of this new drone is also a topic that seems to attract many. The idea is that it may use a 1.2 Lipo while others speculate it could be a whole new battery never seen before. If the latter is the case, then DJI will have successfully broken through the drone industry. Another aspect of the Phantom 5 drone is a short charge life of roughly 30 minutes. This sets the bar for longest flight time a drone has been on. This will obviously see a shift in drone technology towards a more resilient and longer lasting device that can be used for longer periods of time.

DJI markets its brand as having spectacular cameras onboard the drones which counts largely for the use of the drone. The new Phantom 5 has been speculated to have a new type of gimbal that trumps any other currently on the market. This new gimbal will not only utilize 360-degree angles but will also be able to take high quality photos even when moving at high speeds. This would be a huge advantage for anyone trying to take surveyance photographs instead of stopping every few meters, a whole panoramic view can be captured as the drone moves. Another subtle but important aspect of the upcoming drone will be the lens release button. This option helps users change lens on the drone for each type of photography or videography project. The new anti-collision feature will now have an obstacle sensing system which has sensors on all sides thus effectively preventing collisions. The previous version of this drone- the Phantom 4 Advance has completely transformed the driving and control options and the Phantom 5 is expected to be leaps and bounds ahead. This will be contributed by the streamlined design and obstacle sensing system which will allow the drone to identify obstacles from all angles. Another major plus for the new drone will be the throw-in-the-air-to- activate option. This feature reduces time taken to simply activate a drone. The drone will also be controlled with your smartwatch- an aspect that makes it easier to handle your drone and keep it in the air. There are even rumors of a sky pain feature that allows one to create a design in the sky. All avid drone enthusiasts are genuinely excited for what this new drone could bring and while at this point most of these specifications are simply speculation, it should be noted that the company has really capitalized on the buzz and enthusiasm surrounding the release of the Phantom 5 drone. The November date promises a launch event that might push DJI through the roof.

  1. Good job, this is a very interesting topic to write about. Last year I’ve bought the Spark which did an amazing job by taking videos. And the price was not so expensive it worth every dollar. I’m looking forward for the new DJI products.

  2. This drone looks really Awesome! The anti collision feature sounds interesting and very useful. I also can’t believe that it can be controlled through an apple watch.

    1. Thanks Zack for the comment, the anti collision feature does sound awesome and I believe that you will be able to control the drone through the apple watch by doing for example, quick shots, landing, location of the drone, etc.

  3. My friend have drone that we took with us last spring break I believe it was the phantom 4. It was so big comparing it to other drones that I’ve saw in the market. One big thing that I’ve noticed is that the battery life doesn’t last long.
